As I made my way by NYC taxi from midtown to the meatpacking district I had only my imagination to draw upon and ponder what designs the Oribe team would be creating for the Diego Binetti show. Fortunately, I had done some research on past shows of his to at least get a taste of his style in general, which I found to be beautifully romantic and ultra feminine.
Upon arrival at the Westbeth Gallery and amid the usual set up was the extra added charm of an old New York City building…circuit overload! Fortunately the team lead by the cool headed Adam Livermore was up to the task and we all stepped up and kept things going smoothly until showtime.
As for the look, Diego was going for something feminine but with a gothic, rock and roll chic feel, and Adam had flawlessly created the hair that so perfectly personified that look. Classic marcel waves framing each model’s face imparted an angelic quality while the straight lengths with a subtle hint of rough texture gave it the right amount of edge.
Adding another dimension to the show were the FUnits playing a live gig highlighting their latest release entitled “Alone in Babylon”. This combination of fashion and music was enough to ignite the crowd and start an impromptu dance party which truly captured the theme of the entire show…..

If you haven’t heard by now, BB creams are the latest in all-in-one skincare products. Originally developed by a dermatologist in Germany in the 1950’s to protect skin after laser treatment and surgical procedures, it grew in popularity once it was introduced in South Korea and Japan during the 1980’s. Due to it’s all-in-one properties acting as primer, sun block, and moisturizer it quickly became a hit among Korean actresses. It was in 2011 that companies began to market this hot item to the western market and now they can be found from Sephora to your local drug stores.
There are already so many varieties available that choosing the right one can seem daunting, so here are some helpful hints before you make a purchase. The first thing is to asses what skin care needs you have, whether it be anti-aging, blemish control, or lightning. The anti-aging BB creams tend to be smoothing and very hydrating. The creams for blemish prone skin have skin clearing agents and have a more lightweight texture. Lastly, the whitening BB creams help to reduce redness (not actually lighten pigment) and even out skin tone. Most BB creams have a flexible tone pigment that tends to be in the medium to full coverage range, giving a bit more coverage than a tinted moisturizer as well as containing an SPF of 30-50. Also, when testing the pigment, make sure it has a healthy warm color as the SPF ingredients in them can make the color look ashy. The best BB creams I have found have such good coverage that I don’t need to use a foundation with them, but you can do so if you desire.

The month of May brought a wonderful opportunity to yours truly when Edward’s Salon sent me to the Shu Uemura Luxe Gallerie 2012. This was the perfect event in which to receive inspiration and to share some fresh cutting and styling techniques with the salon and our clients. I had the privilege to work with two fabulous artists, Akemi Tamaribuchi and Edris Nicholls who both are truly inspirational individuals. They each hold a higher vision of everyone participating and encourage them to excel beyond their own expectations.

Fashion week in New York is such an exhilarating time when the entire city seems to be buzzing with creativity and this year’s spring event was no exception. One of the newcomers Rad Hourani featured his latest collection for spring, Rad by Rad Hourani. This ready to wear unisex collection features items with clean geometric lines that satisfy the young artsy crowd. The collection can be found at Seven New York and by visiting the official Rad Hourani and Rad by Rad Hourani websites. Through the generosity of Edward Goldstein and Edward’s Salon in Mill Valley  Angie Allino and I had the great pleasure and privilege of being part of this creative process by styling hair backstage. When it comes to special occasions, be it weddings or cocktail parties, going with a romantic hairstyle is a classic choice.  This year’s Golden Globes had many wonderful examples of this look and one of the most stunning was worn by Charlize Theron. Head to toe her style was soft and romantic, with a perfectly placed side bun that complimented the asymmetrical cut of her dress.

Whether your choice is to have all of your hair completely off of the face or to leave a little around the cheekbones for framing, remember to keep the overall look soft.  Also, when incorporating a headband of braids such as a style worn by Jessica Alba, keep the hair surrounding the  braids a little looser and “imperfect” so as not to appear too severe.

Hello everyone! It has been a while since my last blog entry so I would like to share with you the new and exciting things have been happening at Edward’s Salon in Marin. Some of my fellow hair stylists and myself have recently completed a photo shoot of which the images will be entered in the Oribe Backstage Photo Shoot competition. Let me just add that the creativity has been in overdrive and I have discovered what a truly talented group we have here under one roof! Personally, besides having this opportunity to exercise lots of creativity, this has been a journey of discovery; seeing that I am a part of a group that is so supportive and works together extraordinarily well. Can you feel the love??!!

Hello everyone!

I am so happy and thrilled to share with you the Oribe Hair event that some of our amazing stylists attended in Las Vegas recently.  Oribe Backstage Las Vegas 2011 was their newest creative chapter spawned from the mind of Oribe Canales, incredible artist and founder of the product line that many of you may recognize from our retail shelves. The inspirations for this year’s event were:  Elizabeth Taylor’s Butterfield 8 done with a modern edge; the classic look extremely exaggerated,  and futuristic Babylon- think goddess hair gone cyborg.

Our very own Donna Summers completely rocked the hands-on segment of the show by demonstrating her own spectacular versions of the main stage looks. Talk about out of the box creativity!

Hello and welcome to the official maiden voyage of the Edward’s Salon Blog!  We are  looking forward to sharing with all of Marin everything that inspires us in hair, fashion and social events.

Many of you have seen the evolution of Edward’s Salon over the years and I am so thrilled to be able to share this next exciting part of the journey with all of our friends, clients, and  community. To begin, we just hit a wonderful milestone celebrating our 18th anniversary in Marin county!  The real excitement however came with the Annual Apprentice Challenge where the up and coming talent in the salon got a chance to showcase their skills. To document the competition and creativity that they all put in, we have crafted a video of the experience for you to enjoy!
